The US Senate has confirmed the outgoing CIA director Mike Pompeo as second secretary of state to President Donald Trump, after a close vote of 57 legislators in favor, 42 against and one abstention.
It was one of the lowest margins for that position in the country’s recent history. All nominees since the Jimmy Carter administration had received at least 85 or more votes in favor, with the exception of Trump’s first secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, who received 56 votes in favor.
Pompeo is a former Republican congressman from Kansas. He was expected to take an oath at any time so that he can begin to serve as the highest diplomat of the United States
Pompeo has been deeply involved in the recent work of the US government in North Korea and recently traveled to Pyongyang
