Trump suspends his Latin American tour to coordinate the response to the chemical attack in Syria

The president of the United States, Donald Trump, will not travel to the Summit of the Americas in Peru or to Colombia this weekend, and will send in his place to the vice president, Mike Pence, reported Monday the White House.

The president will remain in the United States to supervise the US response to Syria and monitor global events, “White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said in a statement.

Trump condemned on Monday the “atrocious” attack allegedly perpetrated by the regime of Bashar al-Assad and said that in the next 24 to 48 hours he would take an “important” decision on what to do about it. “This has to do with humanity, it can not be allowed to happen,” Trump said in a statement to the press during a meeting with his cabinet.

The US president was about to embark on the first trip to the south of the continent since he arrived at the White House at the beginning of 2017. He had planned to travel to Peru this Friday, April 13 to participate in the Summit of the Americas, which brings together the leaders of the region, and after the summit move to Bogota on Saturday to hold a bilateral meeting with President Juan Manuel Santos.
