Toronto: At least 9 dead and 16 injured after a van hit pedestrians on a busy street in the Canadian city

At least nine people were killed and 16 were injured in a multiple hit in the city of Toronto, in Canada, police said.

Authorities and witnesses reported that, at around 1:30 p.m. (5:30 p.m.) (17:30 GMT), a white van climbed the sidewalk at the intersection of Yonge Street and Finch Avenue.

The driver fled after the incident. The vehicle was found a few blocks from the site, perpetrator was arrested but no details of his identity have been offered. Authorities have not said publicly if the vehicle collisions were intentional. But a law enforcement official briefed on the situation in Toronto and said the incident is believed to be deliberate.

The incident happened in the North York area at the intersection of Yonge Street and Finch Avenue, police said.

The suspect covered between a half-mile and a mile in the vehicle, said Stephen Powell, district chief for Toronto Fire.

The police asked the passers-by not to approach the site and the surrounding, metro services were suspended.
