Former President of Catalonia Carles Puigdemont said he fully trusted European justice and specifically in Belgium, but made it clear that he is ready to go to prison if Belgium, the country he fled to, decides to extradite him.
I have hope and great confidence in European justice and in the of European countries. I will respect their decisions (…) because I have great confidence in the separation of powers and in the guarantees of fair treatment that I can not obtain in Spain,” Puigdemont said in statements to the media in Geneva.
The former Catalan president explained that he is not in hiding in Belgium, a country where he fled in October with four councilors of his dismissed government, but “at the disposal of the authorities”.
Spain accuses the five fugitives of the alleged crimes of rebellion, sedition, embezzlement, prevarication and disobedience.
