The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, said today that he will declare as a national holiday the date on which his country definitively leaves the Organization of American States (OAS) which, it is estimated, will occur in April of next year.
“On that day we are going to have a national party, when Venezuela leaves the OAS we are going to have a town party, we are going to declare a holiday for the entire country,” Maduro said during a meeting with authorities of the ruling United Socialist Party (PSUV). in Caracas.
The statements of the Chavez leader occur while the United States and related countries try in Washington to make a special session prosper, in the framework of the OAS General Assembly that started yesterday, to suspend Venezuela from the organization, for which they need the support of 24 of the 34 member states.
Maduro noted that Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza attended the OAS session and ordered him to answer “all the grievances” of USA and other countries to defend the “dignity of the Venezuelan people, even if he has to speak thousand of times”.
