Macron, in Congress, praises “special relationship” with the US

French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday delivered a speech before the two houses of the US Congress, praising the “special relationship” between the two countries and expressing his desire to strengthen historical ties.

“The American people and the French people have had an encounter with freedom,” said the French president at the Capitol in Washington.

In recounting the bonds of friendship that unite the two nations, he recalled that Ben Franklin and the French philosopher Voltaire once saw each other “and kissed each other on the cheek”

It is the first time that a French president has spoken to the Congress in more than a decade, but it is a tradition that foreign leaders visit the Capitol in Washington.
