The US president, Donald Trump, reiterated today that he wants to “leave Syria”, once the “successful” mission against the Islamic State (IS) is completed, and assured that he will take “a decision very soon”.
I want to get out of there (Syria), I want to bring our troops home, and rebuild our country,” Trump said at a joint press conference with the presidents of Latvia, Raimonds Vejonis; Estonia, Kersti Kaljulaid; and Lithuania, Dalia Grybauskaite.
The president stressed that the “main mission” of the United States in Syria was to get rid of the Islamic State and that mission, he said, “we have almost completed it”
“It’s being very expensive for us (…) Sometimes it’s time to go home. We are going to make a decision (on Syria) very soon, “he added.
As he has done on other occasions, he recalled that the US it has spent more than 7,000 million dollars in the Middle East in recent years and has not achieved “anything but death and destruction”.
Last week, Trump announced his intention to leave Syria, although his words were naunce by the Pentagon, which said that the situation was still complex and it was necessary to maintain presence to contribute to regional stability.
The US leads in the region an international coalition formed by more than 60 countries that fight Islamist terrorism, main objective of the operation ‘Inherent Responses’ in Syria since September 2014, and that has the approval of a resolution of the Security Council of the United Nations.
Today, it was my honor to welcome Estonia President @KerstiKaljulaid, Lithuania President @Grybauskaite_LT, and Latvia President @Vejonis to the @WhiteHouse. Congratulations on your 100th anniversaries of independence! #BalticSummit: https://t.co/XAchZ3zUSe pic.twitter.com/RRftyTGEvb
