A ferry with some 80 people on board sank in a lake on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia, and at least one person lost his life.
Rescue crews searched the area in the dark of the night on Monday after the boat sank in Lake Toba in inclement weather, at about 5:30 pm, according to disaster agency spokesperson Sutopo. Purwo Nugroho
He explained that up to now 18 people have been rescued and a death was confirmed.
The lake of about 1,145 square kilometers (440 square miles) was formed from a volcano, making it a popular tourist destination.
Maher Tamba, an emergency agency official, said that about six boats were participating in the search tasks, but rescue work is hampered by strong waves and bad weather.
The tragedies with ferries are common in Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, due to the lack of respect for established norms
