The ruling Communist Party of China (CPC) proposed this weekend to eliminate a clause in the Constitution that prohibits a president from holding office for more than ten years, a total of two consecutive terms.

The measure, which is assumed to be approved by the Legislature, will allow Xi to remain in office beyond 2023, when he had to retire.
Dissidents and observers of Chinese politics consider this decision a “step towards” tyranny, while the government defends the action as a tool to maintain “stability”

What is the proposal?

Yuwen Wu explains that this limit was imposed as a result of a prolonged debate in the country after the turbulent era of the Cultural Revolution, promoted in 1966 by Mao Zedong.
