11 children killed in suicide attack against NATO convoy in southern Afghanistan

At least 11 children were killed and 17 others wounded, including 5 Romanian NATO soldiers, in a suicide attack today on a convoy of allied forces in Kandahar province in southern Afghanistan.

A suicide bomber detonated a car bomb against a convoy of NATO Romanian military as they passed a mosque causing a powerful explosion that tore down a thin wall that enclosed the courtyard of the religious compound, Efe said on Saturday provincial police spokesman Matiullah Helal.

The children, who were in the courtyard of the mosque, lost their lives when they were hit by shrapnel and crushed by the pieces of the wall blown up by the explosion, which took place in Daman district around 10.30 local time (6.00 GMT ).

Another 12 people, including women and children, were injured in the attack and have been transferred to hospitals in the region.

Elal said that 5 Romanian soldiers were also injured.
